ARTIST STATEMENT
Painting from land, place and culture Lake Ontario and Muskoka Watersheds
My current thoughts.........
I choose subjects based on my observations in the places and spaces I live, constructing compositions from experiential reality. The paintings are perceptions of change that have altered the environment, bringing to mind and revealing the unseen stories in the landscape. All my current series carry a common thread of duality in relation to materials and mediums. They are painted images that have symbolic narratives in terms of their interconnectedness to the land, resilience, survival, documenting environmental changes in the landscapes I inhabit. I incorporate traditional mediums and materials weaving in elements that directly come from the land, and the community. In the past I painted local landscapes on reused press plates, on the reverse of these paintings were the stories of people and events that shaped the communities' landscapes. I continue to mine local landscape for materials making natural pigments, specifically wild grape from the shores of Lake Ontario and wild elder berry from the Muskoka River. My subjects connect to the fragility of ecosystems affected by urban sprawl and identify all landscapes through experiential cultural narratives.
