Picture
Shadows is a new series of paintings using natural inks, made from plants in my backyard on the edge of a nature reserve. The natural pigments are applied through a process of layering on cotton, natural fibre that has been manipulated for centuries.
These images transform an experiential moment of urban creatures painted with inks
from their locale.
Natural inks move and react to one another until dry, metaphorically resembling the ever-constant competition present in nature. The painting process is slow and unpredictable, interestingly this is mirrored by urban sprawl, and the interaction of human encroachment with the land and urban creatures. These natural pigments expand and react to one another differently depending on their chemical compositions creating a constant movement, of absorption. This medium is alive, and I only take what I need to further nature’s existence.
The shadows that lurk behind us all, carbon footprints local to unfamiliar; these creatures in these landscapes are the shadows in the light and dark centred on the impact of the suburban experiential narrative. The medium and the subjects are the message. The impermanence of the medium and the subjects reflect on our momentary collective existence that is in a continual transformation of change.
